Washington, DC, March 12, 2008 – Epic AIR has been nominated for the 2007 Robert J. Collier Trophy for the record-breaking design and development of the Victory VLJ. The high performance Victory began as a clean-sheet design in December of 2006 and made its first test flight on July 6, 2007, a record 6.5 months later. The Robert J. Collier Trophy is awarded annually “for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America, with respect to improving the performance, efficiency and safety of air or space vehicles.” Previous recipients include Chuck Yeager for piloting the Bell X-1,. Clarence "Kelly" Johnson for his leadership at Lockheed's Skunk Works in the development of the the SR-71 Blackbird, and the F-22 Raptor Team, which included the United States Air Force, Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Boeing, Northrop Grumman, Raytheon, Pratt and Whitney and others. “The Victory is testament to our remarkable team. They’re Epic!” says Epic President and CEO Rick Shrameck. “Our engineers and manufacturing teams not only designed and flew the Victory in record time, but on a shoestring budget, by industry standards.” The Epic Victory is a single engine, 4-5 person jet with a 320+ KTAS cruise at 28,000’. “In our research, we did not find ANY other company out there that can demonstrate this kind of focus and commitment to bring an aircraft from the proverbial drawing boards to reality in this length of time,” commented Schrameck. “I’ve always said that Epic has the best engineers and manufacturing talent in the world, and I think development of the Victory clearly proves it!” Schrameck was quick to acknowledge that success of the Victory project came from the support of all the Epic employees and other manufacturers. Other nominees for this esteemed award included Dassault Aviation, Commercial Aviation Safety Team, Airbus A380, ADS-B Technology and SBIRS/HEO Test and On-Orbit Operations Team. “All of us at Epic are humbled and honored to be included in the small, but prestigious group of people that have been considered for the Robert J. Collier Trophy.” Robert J. Collier, publisher of Collier's Weekly magazine, was an aviation pioneer and president of the Aero Club of America. He commissioned the 525 pound (240 kg) trophy in 1911, originally named the Aero Club of America Trophy. After presenting it several times, Collier died in 1918 after the end of World War I. Collier was the first person to purchase an airplane from the Wright brothers for personal use.
